The Big Sandy Area Development District Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan is a FEMA required pre-disaster mitigation planning document. The plan stems from the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 that required all local governments to develop and adopt a mitigation plan in order to receive Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Funding.  The plan is comprehensive, detailing each identifiable hazard in the Big Sandy region and to what extent each hazard impacts the region. The plan also describes the planning process, risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and maintenance procedures for the plan moving forward. The Hazard Mitigation update process is an extensive undertaking for the local governments and EM Directors. Public meetings are advertised and the general public is encouraged to attend in order to best gather the needed information. The 2016 update of the hazard mitigation plan is currently awaiting FEMA approval.
